Berti Vogts New Coach of Nigerian Football Team!!

Hi Guys,

I thought this would be of interest to you:

Former German worldchampion defender (1974) and coach of the Mannschaft of Germany (1990-1998) berti VOGTS has just agrees to coach the Super Eagles of Nigeria until the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. "My task is to lead Nigeria to the 2008 Africa Nations Cup and to the 2010 World Cup finals", said the 60-year-old coach who replaces Nigerian Austin EGAOVOEN who has been sounded out to become his assistant. VOGTS first serious challenge will be to defeat Uganda in march for Nigeria next qualifying match for the 2008 African Cup of Nations in Ghana. The decision to recruit VOGTS has been controversial in Nigeria, since Frenchman Philippe TROUSSIER, a former coach of the the Green Eagles was also candidate for the job. There were some critics in Nigerian footbzll circles insisting on VOGTS's lack of experience of African football and his poor results as coach of Scotland between 2002 and 2004. This controversy led the boss of the Nigerian Football Association (NFA)to explain he preferred VOGTS to TROUSSIER. Sani LULU told BBC Sports that despite keen interest for TROUSSIER, he has taken in account the fact that VOGTS "has a very strong track record; he won the Worldcup with Germany as assistant coach to Franz BECKENBAUER. VOGTS also won the European Cup with Germany in 1966 and such a landmark puts him above others", said LULU.
